Maison des Chevaliers – Musée laïque d'Art Sacré du Gard

The Gard secular museum of sacred art offers a bold and original cultural approach to sacred art. Serving as a showcase for the collections, the Maison des Chevaliers, classified as a Historic Monument, is decorated with decorations and painted ceilings from the 14th and 15th centuries.
A truly secular museum!
What is the connection between a Romanesque Virgin, a statuette of a soldier from a Chinese tomb, an African mask and a Cretan icon? Different from traditional Fine Arts museums, the secular museum of sacred art of the Gard brings together objects that we are not used to seeing coexisting. The meaning of these works is obscure to most of us today. The secular museum of sacred art of the Gard offers a bold and original cultural approach to sacred art and enlightens you on the meaning of the works in its collection.

A medieval residence
Serving as a showcase for the collections, the Maison des Chevaliers, entirely classified as a Historic Monument, is one of the jewels of Gard's heritage. Behind this enigmatic name hides the perfectly preserved residence of a rich dynasty of merchants from the Rhône valley. Built from the 12th century, the house has undergone numerous transformations.

Discover the impressively proportioned 14th century Royal Court of Justice and two 15th century ceremonial rooms adorned with sumptuous decor of striking modernity. On the magnificent painted ceilings, alternating with a program of coats of arms, exotic animals, fantastical beings and scenes from everyday life depict the imagination of men in the Middle Ages.
