The Medieval Garden of Uzès and its towers
Nestled in the heart of the old town, the Medieval Garden of Uzès, a 12th century site, is a living testimony to the region's rich historical heritage.
The old stones of King's Towers and the Bishop imprints of memories blend happily with the plant kingdom. By taking the 100 steps of the Tour du Roi, a panorama of the roofs of Uzès is offered to visitors.
Part of the castle including the Rainon Tower, known as the Clock Tower, was sold to the Bishops in the 13th rd century and the other tower was exchanged with the King of France Charles VIII in the 15th rd century. Both had their courts and their prisons. The places will be used of prison space until 1926, when Uzès lost its sub-prefecture status. Subsequently they were transformed into reserve space, municipal workshops or even homes.
Abandoned for several decades, the restored places will come back to life thanks to creation of a garden in 1995 which is inspired by the monastic gardens and hortus conclusus (enclosed garden) of the Middle Ages, offering visitors a fascinating insight into the horticultural and medicinal practices of the time.
