Located in Vers-Pont-du-Gard, the Pont du Gard was built by the Romans in the first century AD, and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985. Proudly overlooking the Gardon gorges, this stone colossus is the emblem of the destination but above all an unmissable visit during your stay in the Pays d'Uzès Pont du Gard.

Come and discover the Pont du Gard

Gard's Bridge was built by the Romans in the first century AD. In reality, it is not a bridge, but a vestige of the aqueduct which transported water from the Eure source in Uzès, to the ancient Roman city “Nemausus”, known today as Nîmes.  For five centuries, 35 m000 of water were transported every day by the Uzès-Nîmes aqueduct, to supply drinking water to the inhabitants, but also to the thermal baths, fountains and gardens.

48,77 meters high, built on three levels, and proudly overlooking the Gardon, it is today the tallest ancient aqueduct bridge in the world ! It is a true symbol of Roman scientific genius. About 50 kilometers long, its total height difference is only 17 meters. The builders of the time had to demonstrate great ingenuity to build, across the scrubland landscapes, bridges, pipes and tunnels to Nîmes.

Today, the Pont du Gard is the only example of an ancient three-story bridge still standing and preserved. Over the centuries, the Pont du Gard has been the source of inspiration for many artists: great names in literature, including Rabelais, Rousseau, Stendhal, Dumas and Mérimée have described its particular beauty.

“You know that this monument, which was only a simple aqueduct, rises majestically in the middle of the deepest solitude. The soul is thrown into a long and deep astonishment. The Colosseum in Rome hardly plunged me into such a deep reverie. »
