From April 19 to June 14, the Ceysson & Bénétière gallery will present, at the Domaine de Panéry
in the Gard, the recent works of the artist Lionel Sabatté. Recently nominated for the Marcel Prize
Duchamp 2025, the artist continues his research on the mineral and the animal by introducing the
pozzolan, a volcanic powder that is used in the composition of Roman cement. It
results in poetic, sensitive and disturbing works, nourishing a global reflection on the
alive. Through this exhibition, Sabatté opens a new chapter in his work, anchored in the
materiality of the world and confronting us with the inevitable passage of time.

Pozzolan, linked to both the history of humanity and that of the Earth, becomes for Sabatté
a new field of experimentation. Continuing his bestiary, the artist shapes creatures
emerging from the ashes, birds which, like the phoenix, are reborn. These sculptures
embody the suspended moment where matter seems to self-repair, between destruction and
reconstruction, a disturbing echo of the processes of life.

In addition to this set of sculptures, there is a series of oil paintings also made with
pozzolan, which this time is mixed with fragments of silk fabric. Lionel Sabatté works
on the ground. He pours different dilutions of liquids onto his canvas, revealing shapes
organic and moving, shaping a universe where new creatures emerge. Through these
gestures, he questions the relationship between chance and mastery, figuration and abstraction, birth and
dissolution. Silk, linked to the metamorphosis of the butterfly, and pozzolan — volcanic rock,
symbol of destruction, weave a dialectic between the mineral and the organic, the ephemeral and
timelessness, birth and chaos.
