The Pont du Gard Academy offers you a cycle of conferences throughout the year. Find upcoming conferences on historical themes and local heritage.
Program of upcoming conferences:
>> March 2 (14:30 p.m. to 16 p.m.)
Roman architecture in heritage,
given by Théodore GUUINIC, architectural historian and architect, doctor from Paul-Valéry Montpellier III University
and lecturer at the National School of Architecture in Montpellier.
“Beyond the Roman antiquities of Gard, a series of architectural monuments that bear witness to the vitality and genius of Roman civilization over the long term, from its birth to its decadence, will be put into perspective. Familiar or distant, these legacies will also be considered through the prism of their reception during the modern and contemporary eras, testifying to a progressive awakening of heritage consciousness and the fortune of the Roman legacy in the art of building in the West.
>> May 18 (14:30 p.m. – 16:30 p.m.)
Some reflections sparked by the route of the Nîmes aqueduct,
presented by Claude Larnac.
The conference will be based on models, and will be followed by a discussion with the participants.
>> October 5 (14:30 p.m. – 17 p.m.)
Conference by Didier Riesen: The work of Joseph Massota in Castillon du Gard
The Pont du Gard is at the origin of the project by Joseph Massota (1925-1989) in Castillon-du-Gard. Let's imagine the challenge for a young architect of building a small village facing the Roman monument... The Roman bridge determined the architecture of the houses and the layout of the site. The project is unfinished, but the achievements allow us to understand the architect's thinking. The conference will be followed by a visit to the places mentioned. It is organized by the APdG at the request of the municipality, as part of its cultural activities.
>> December 7 (14:30 p.m. – 17 p.m.)
Conference by Alain Veyrac “From the Ace of Nîmes to the crocodile”
The Ace of Nîmes circulated for nearly a century throughout the Roman Empire. Although known to lovers of ancient coins, the Ace is also known for giving the city its emblem throughout the millennia.
The Ace is certainly the first recognized emblem of Nîmes but we are mistaken in naming it like that! It is actually a Dupondius, a coin that has twice the value of the Ace. But hey… Let’s move on! 2044 years ago, the first Ace was struck in Nîmes, a curiosity destined to gain notoriety.
Alain Veyrac will tell us the whole story which goes from the advent of the Empire to around the middle of the first century AD.
